You may think that all crates are the same. They are not and actually there are subtle differences between many of them. These small differences are what you should pay attention to. However, the most obvious difference is that some crates are plastic and some are metal. In addition, you should always look for quality, safety and functionality of the crate.

A large dog crate should be purchased not on looks, but on safety, security, quality and functionality.

Plastic – If you choose a large dog crate that is plastic, keep in mind that it cannot be folded to store. It may be sturdy but the material can be chewed and can crack over time. In addition, the weight of the crate is not very heavy to a large dog could possibly move the crate around which would not be safe for them.

Ensure that there is plenty of ventilation, there is ample room for your dog to stand, turn around and to be able to lie down and stretch out in. Try to open and close the door; does it stick when trying to open and close it? What type of locking mechanism does it have? Is it strong or is it cheap and it might be able to be easily wiggled open? Check the edges, are they smooth so they won’t scratch you or your dog?

Metal – A metal cage is preferred over a plastic because it will generally last longer. In addition, there can be more features included (number of doors, collapsible) which provides more opportunities to use the crate. What is the reason you are choosing a large dog crate? Are you buying it for a puppy, a large dog or several small dogs?

If you are buying a large dog crate for a puppy, this is a smart move because you will save money by not having to buy several crates as he grows. If this is the case, buy a divider that can go into the crate if the crate doesn’t come with one. A divider will create a smaller area which is beneficial to the puppy’s psyche. He will feel ‘snug’ and more secure.

Some crates have 2 or 3 doors (the third door is usually on top). This is helpful to add or remove puppies as it works like a box with a lid so they don’t run out when the crate is opened. The latches should be strong and when in the closed position, the latch should be secured so there are no opportunities for escaping dogs.

If you are purchasing a large dog crate for several small dogs, ensure that there is ample space for both to stretch out in when sleeping. If the dogs don’t get along, you can use a divider if the crate has a door on opposite ends and then you will have 2 crates in one. Again, make sure that all of the corners and any welding seams are smooth so neither you or your dog(s) can be hurt. This should also be a concern if the large dog crate will be in your car so that the interior of your car won’t be damaged either.

Functionality, safety and durability are important features of any dog crate. There are a number of reasons to choose a large dog crate and each one should be as important as the dog that will be inside of it.
